My Investment Portfolio (January 2011)

STI started the new year with a bang but lost its momentum towards the end of the month. Middle East unrest was the main reason for traders to sell off their positions, but as a value investor at heart, I took this opportunity to accumulate some small cap value stocks on weakness towards the end of the month.

For my top 30 stock holdings, there is not much changes, except for a new entry - First REIT. It appears my top 30 list for the first time due to my subscription to its rights issue.

For this month, I have accepted the delisting offers for ASA Holdings and China Angel. My holdings in Thomson Medical Centre had also been compulsory acquired by the offeror. I have also participated in the following scrip dividend scheme - MTQ Corp.

I have bought the following companies from the open market this month - Casa Holdings, Chosen, Chuan Hup, Colex, Food Junction, Harry's Holdings, IFS, Kian Ann, Tat Seng, Tiong Seng and Wing Tai. I have subscribed to the following rights issues - Aspial and Shangri-La Asia.

February will be an interesting month as companies with financial year ending 31 December 2010 will be reporting their full-year results. I will be looking at some of these results in details. Wishing all my readers many more returns in the Year of the Rabbit. Gong Xi Fa Cai!

Hi newbie_george,

Nope, I didn't go to FCOT AGM/EGM.

Yeap. I know that investor. He is Mano Sabnani, former editor of TODAY newspaper. He also worked in Business Times before. His profile can be found at:

He is quite outspoken at various AGMs.

Hi newbie_george,

As one gets older, the amount of Ang Pow money gets lesser..... :)

Anyway, they are not significant enough to even buy one lot of my favourite mid-cap stock. I guess I would just save them up for my daily expenses.

shifu, i wana ask u a question...

the ultimate goal of all and everything what we r doing now is to achieve financial freedom after age45 in your case. so after 45, you lead a comfortable life..

however, engineeringically speaking, we all know that all living things on earth will leave the world at some point in time. but we dunno when.

hence, if lets say a person were to save so much money, invest a lot, build a good solid portfolio, but in the end, he passed away < age 45, then it is totally wasted. he might as well spend a spendthrift life enjoying life instead of building a portfolio.

now, the problem is: all living things dunno when we will leave the earth. hence, does it make sense to put our health and safety the top priority first and then investment the second priority?

We should put more money, more effort, more time in exercising, go for regular blood test, checkup, etc.. drink top quality fruit juice everyday, etc.. and we try to ensure our lifespan is as long as possible, all these should be the top priority above building a diversified portfolio. what do u think?

Hi newbie_george,

I guess it is about trying to achieve a balance in life. I do not equate being a spendthrift as enjoying life. In fact, some things in life can be enjoyed without spending much money. For example, having a chat with a friend over coffee or lunch, going for an early evening jog, enjoying a good game of chess etc.

In fact, I enjoy a simple lifestyle without spending much money. Therefore, I am not forced to downgrade my lifestyle to save money for investment. But rather, it comes naturally for me.

I don't think my life is wasted if I passed on early. I could donate part of my estate to charities and of course back to NTU's "I Gave" donation programme as well to help needy students for their bursary fund. :)

Ultimately, life is not only about yourself. To achieve financial freedom is only one of my objective in life.
