My Investment Portfolio (July 2012)

July 2012 turns out to be another good month for investors. STI closed the month above 3000 points, as investors came back into the market. There are two high profile IPOs this month on SGX - IHH Healthcare and Ascendas Hospitality Trust.

For this month, I have attended the following AGMs/EGMs/briefings - NeraTel, CitySpring, Orchard Parade, SMRT, Valuetronics, AI-REIT, The Hour Glass, AIMS AMP Capital Industrial REIT, Jason Marine, Bukit Sembawang Estates, Meiban, MTQ Corp, Old Chang Kee, Eastern Holdings, Fischer Tech, Singapore Windsor and GP Industries.

For my top 30 holdings, new entries include Isetan(S) and Old Chang Kee due to share price performance. APB is the main mover in the list, as there is an expected bidding war for the company.

I have bought the following companies from the market this month - AIMS AMP Capital Industrial REIT, Dynamic Colours, Guthrie GTS, Hanwell, Hong Leong Finance, Hotel Grand Central, Hong Fok, The Hour Glass, Jason Marine, Keppel T&T, Superior Multi-Packaging, Tuan Sing, United Engineers and WBL Corp. I have also reduced my stake in GSH Corp and PSL Holdings to partially fund for my purchases this month.

I have participated in the following rights issue - IPC Corp. I have converted the following company warrants to shares - Golden Agri-Resources. I have accepted the following takeover offers - Brothers and Wing Tai (partial offer). I have also participated in the following scrip dividend scheme - Internet Technology Group.

There will not be much AGMs to attend next month. However, companies having financial year ending March 2012 and some REITs will be paying out dividends. I will continue to seek for ideas to prudently re-invest those dividends back into the market.

When I read what you said about financial advisers in "About Me", I said yes! Is it possible to ask you for your opinions in e-mail about some financial decisions I have to make soon? Especially one on an ILP I bought 6 months ago and whether I should just accept the loss of about 8K that went into 1st year fees and use the premiums I would have paid in the coming years in a savings plan. The agent told me an ILP is better than savings, and I should have looked closely at everything, but I made an error in being overly trusting. I really need some sensible, practical advise from a fellow person working to achieve a better quality of life in the future. So please do let me know if I can e-mail you?

Hi Unknown,

My two cents is that you have already paid most of the sunk costs in regular premium ILPs, especially in the initial years whereby almost all of the premium goes to commision and not much had been invested into the fund.

A savings plan might not be better than an ILP. It really depends on your needs. You can email me at chua73@singnet.com.sg for further discussion if you wish to.

Thanks, ghchua. I'll e-mail you. (although I changed my profile name, it somehow appears as Unknown, but that's ok :)
