My Investment Portfolio (June 2009)

The market is directionless this month and therefore there is not much to comment about. As for my portfolio, I have been subscribing to rights issues and therefore I have not added much from the open market.

Having said that, I did add onto my holdings in SingPost this month on price weakness. Therefore, it had appeared in my top 30 holdings list for the first time. SingPost is a cash generating business with good dividend yield. I am looking forward to collect their final dividend next month.

SP AusNet also appeared in my top 30 holdings for the first time as I have subscribed to its rights issue. Its retail tranche is surprisingly under-subscribed and therefore I got all my excess rights application filled. I have also continued my participation in their scrip dividend scheme.

Olam International is in my top 30 holdings this month mainly due to share price movement. I have not added onto Olam since my participation in their last rights issue on valuation ground.

Next month, I will be participating in a few rights issues, with NOL and Pacific Andes being the main ones. As usual, I will set aside some funds for these rights issues. Also, I will re-invest the dividends collected from my portfolio and my GST Credits into some good potential small cap stocks.

Giving Back to My Alumni

One of the things I would like to do in future is to set up an endowment fund for the needy to pursue tertiary education. I am still not there yet, but I would do my part by increasing my contribution to NTU Annual Giving this year.

I am glad that my investment returns had been able to give me this kind of option which otherwise will not be available to me if I only stick to the pay of my miserable day job. Being a bursary fund holder for each of my three years in NTU, I can certainly relate to those undergraduates who came from low income families and struggle with increasing tuition fees and living expenses every year.

Investment is not only about returns, but also being able to make an impact in other people's life. I am glad that I am able to do so by investing prudently and living a simple life.

While you are working hard for the next pay/promotion or busy with enjoying the "finer" things in life, do remember to take a step back and help those who are in need.

What meaningful stuff you have done (or planning to do) with your investment returns? Maybe you would like to share with ghchua under the comments section of this blog.
